Drag is a protest. Drag is not a mockery of femininity it is the subversion of gender expectation. Drag is power, it is unity. The drag community changed my life and ive never done Drag. Drag is an art form and a performance, it is an expression of human feeling and a protest of human oppression. Drag has a long and beautiful history of resistance and compassion and unity. It has strong deep roots in the communities of black americans, and in queer communities of western Europe before the second world war.
This is disgusting. This statement is disgusting. Drag is beautiful, and it is funny and relatable and it is a journey. You fundamentally misunderstand what drag is to call it mockery of women or womanhood. It is a celebration of femininity and masculinity. It’s the deconstruction of western gender roles. Drag punches back at biological gender essentialism in the name of liberation. Drag is for everyone.
To equate drag with blackface is a declaration of war on gender non-conformity itself. This is a declaration of hatred for those who step beyond the boundaries of gender assignment. I feel at once furious and absolutely despaired. All we have fought for is at risk of being taken away. Fascism wants to destroy us.
You reqd the intent accurately. It’s time to swing back with everything we got. It’s still a culture war, and there’s still time to keep it that way.
If it’s a culture war…. Only one side is fighting for culture the other …. Well. I don’t think nazis are well known for culture
Fear not, women and people of color: an old white man has decided what you do and do not find offensive.
This is the same Texas trump Judge who mandates everyone get polio and threw out the Bill of Rights. All the fascists shop for his court so they can get those sweet sweet corrupt decisions.
Well that’s fucking stupid.
So drag shows are explicitly banned at that school because they’re morally equivalent to blackface, which notably isn’t explicitly banned at that school. Hmm.
You can’t argue against a bad faith argument. You either comply or protest/resist. You can also riot.
I think the easy way to tell the difference between blackface and drag queens, is black people don’t like people in blackface… meanwhile, women fucking love drag queens. Have y’all seen Rupauls Drag race? The only reason that exists is women. 70% of the people watching it are women. I’m pretty sure, that if you aired a show called Larry the Cable Guys’ Black Face Space Race… Black people would not be the majority viewer
Even as a woman who spent a few years offended by drag as a transmisogynistic caricature (I learned more and got over it and myself, though I’ll admit some queens do get pretty misogynistic), it’s not even close to the same.
Like, to start with it’s not appropriate to compare misogyny in America to anti black racism at all. But secondly, one of the primary components of blackface is that it came from those seeking to deny black people rights. Drag performers generally believe women deserve equal rights, even the ones who personally dislike us.
“My children MUST KNOW what genetalia every person they meet has. I am perfectly sane.”
Knew it was the 5th district before reading. Also what a fucking argument of “even if it attempts to convey a message about gender, it’s unlikely the target audience would understand it so it’s not political speech”
Technically blackface isn’t banned, is it? Why use it as an example?
Republicans have learned to disguise their intentions so well, in other words, that the disguise has seeped into and transformed the intention. Even without directly engaging the progressive argument, conservatives may absorb, by some elusive osmosis, the deeper categories and idioms of the left, even when those idioms run directly counter to their official stance.
After years of opposing the women’s movement, for example, Phyllis Schlafly seemed genuinely incapable of conjuring the prefeminist view of women as deferential wives and mothers. Instead, she celebrated the activist “power of the positive woman.” And then, as if borrowing a page from The Feminine Mystique, she railed against the meaninglessness and lack of fulfillment among American women; the difference was that she blamed these ills on feminism rather than on sexism. When she spoke out against the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), she didn’t claim that it introduced a radical new language of rights. Her argument was the opposite. The ERA, she told the Washington Star, “is a takeaway of women’s rights.” It will “take away the right of the wife in an ongoing marriage, the wife in the home.” Schlafly was obviously using the language of rights in a way that was opposed to the aims of the feminist movement; she was using rights talk to put women back into the home, to keep them as wives and mothers. But that is the point: conservatism adapts and adopts, often unconsciously, the language of democratic reform to the cause of hierarchy.

I think that they’re saying that blackface is just as malicious as drag, ie., not malicious at all. But that if they’re not allowed to pretend to be black and make racist jokes, all to celebrate white pride, then why should other people get to “pretend” and celebrate queer joy?
They’re saying “if I can’t do it from a moral standpoint, you can’t do it from a legal standpoint.”
But their actual honest reasoning, the one that they whisper to themselves before going to sleep after praying to white corporate Jesus, is, “fuck those people different than me. I’ll sleep well knowing that I have the power to make others suffer.”
They want to make themselves feel better about being racists: “Well if drag is ok, then blackface is too!”
So they’re going to prosecute people doing black face right?
Right?
A right-wing federal judge compared drag to blackface in a ruling allowing a Texas university to ban drag shows on campus, arguing that drag is not a form of free speech protected by the First Amendment.
It was a group of students suing the school for not allowing drag shows, I’m assuming that blackface performances are also not allowed at that school.
I’m just seeing this argument through to conclusion but if you want to do blackface it’s legal right? His argument is literally you took away something we like so we’re going to take away something you like
Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, who was appointed by the president during his first term, emphatically agreed with West Texas A&M University President Walter Wendler’s ban of the art form, endorsing Wendler’s characterization of drag as something that “denigrates women in the same way that blackface denigrates African Americans.”
This is why we are losing our rights, and will continue to do so. This is not an unpopular opinion to anyone on the right. They all support the curtailing of the rights of trans people—every single one of them. There is literally not a single republican that has any redeeming qualities. It is all overshadowed by their hate.
I just fucking love when straight white people decide that they need to help us, by taking away our voices and identities. In many ways, the straight white liberals are even worse. They stand by and let their trans neighbors have their humanity stripped away. But it’s ok, because in June, they change their profile pic to one of a rainbow. Fucking snakes in the grass. The right has made us political poison, and the democrats are too cowardly to counteract it. After all, they’ve got donors and the next election to think about.
Religious people should not be allowed to vote. They should not be allowed to shove their “life choices” on us. In fact, I think we need to make sure we get them out of the school systems. They are by and large the most likely to molest and rape children. Do you want your kids around that? I, for one, do not support christian. It goes against basic science. We really should get a list of all of the Christian’s, so we can make sure to avoid them in hiring and housing. Who wants one of those types ruining the images of our institutions and way of life? Gross. They might need to be evaluated, to be sure as to whether they can legally make their own decisions. Hell, we’re going to need re-education camps, to help get rid of the years of brainwashing and normalization of sexually assaulting children.
