As much as I bitch about tankies on this place, I’ve also found more real leftists here than any other online community I’ve been to. Which is why I’m so determined to separate the two groups conceptually when talking about them on the Threadiverse - one has legitimate value!

Being a person of colour, I find tankies to be ironic racists as well. They whiteknight and believe they speak for the oppressed persons of people around the world, but deny China’s encroaching in South China Sea and squatting within Philippines’ 200 nautical miles zone and bullying Vietnamese fishermen. There were occasions when I was accused of being a white Westerner keyboard warrior, and when I say I am South East Asian, and they shut up. I always turn it around to tankies and say they are probably white Westerners actually living a comfortable life and never have lived in a communist state. They deny the lived reality of people who actually experienced communism, and pretend that Europe and East Asia allowing US military bases is because of US’s strong arming, not of China’s or Russia’s (with Trump’s erratic policies, all that might change and he is a boon to both Putin and Xi).
If tankies are not bots and paid trolls, I’m convinced that they are neurodivergent in some ways because of childish behaviour and terminally online presence. I listened to an interview of a former neo-Nazi mentioned that many recruits turned out to be autistic but had been undiagnosed for many years. I imagine many tankies are also the same. The very first people that extremist groups recruit are those who are vulnerable, both mentally and emotionally, because desperation and loneliness are easy states to be manipulate someone in.
You don’t get it. Workers are supposed to seize the means of production, then give it to the politburo, who then gives it to a strongman who invades other countries, installs vassals, destroys their culture, erases their language, and starves them by stealing their resources while those in the capital lead lives of relative luxury.
It’s completely different than imperialism.

I work at a healthcare facility with 1000+ employees, overwhelming majority college educated, no one knows what, “tankie” means.

The party is in power, the party represents workers that means workers are in power. It just doesn’t quite work if the party doesn’t actually properly represent the workers…
Honestly, I think that’s the sincerely held belief of vanguardists; it can’t be authoritarian because all the people in power are workers, now, and so they’ll look out for each other (because of class solidarity) and look out for the interests of workers.
It’s the only thing that I can think of that smooths out the contradictions, in their logic, of not viewing it as authoritarian & revolution and building solidarity being the seemingly primary concerns, at all times.

Tankies: The workers can’t be trusted to know what’s best for them, so we need a bureaucracy comprised of intelligentsia to guide the way to communism. Don’t worry, only true proletarians will be allowed into our bureaucracy, and workers can organize themselves so long as it’s on our terms. And don’t you dare call it a class!
Anarchists: The people have a basic right to self-determination and power should be distributed as equitably as possible between all people so they can make their own decisions, good or bad. People can and should organize themselves in a variety of ways on their own terms so long as they do not subjugate others, as hierarchies at scale form the basis of class society.
Neoliberals and Tankies (in unison): Stupid naive anarkiddie, don’t you know people need their betters to tell them what to do! Stick with what actually works and keep your dumb ideas of autonomy and free association to yourself (hides evidence of countless atrocities behind their backs).

Not the ones on slrpnk.net. I sometimes go to their spaces, usually to argue, sometimes to commiserate on points of agreement, but authoritarianism is absolutely unwelcome on slrpnk.net. That’s a good thing about the fediverse, that it allows people to cultivate protected spaces while still allowing interaction with those outside of them, but always on your own terms.
Now there’s plenty of self-described anarchists that hang out with the tankies on .ml and hexbear, but those are usually people who have either been tankies themselves and are deconstructing or they are non-committal anarchists on the path to becoming tankies.
