Widespread poverty, endless war, crony capitalism with a strong and untouchable oligarchy, all ruled by an incompetent but brutal dictator and his loyalists. The portrayal of the US and the shape of our leadership definitely makes it seem that way but there are a massive number of intellectuals in the US. The current admin is trying to drive them out (or at least inadvertently doing so), but they are certainly a reality. Funnily enough, a huge number of them are first or second gen immigrants because the intellectually inclined would come here for the school and the opportunities.
