I bought some cheap Chinese 2-way radios. The packaging has a big American flag and a “Designed in U.S.A.” claim, which I suspect is bullshit given the company involved. Also, there are two Bible verses referenced. This smacks of pandering to a particular slice of conservative Americans. All I want is cheap radios for skiing with my kids next winter, not a reminder of my country’s socio-political bullshit.

It doesn’t really mean anything, but conservatives parade it around alot. I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a black and white American flag. Maybe someone else is more knoweledgable.

Black and gray flags are used by the US military on some uniforms. Civilians also sometimes display them as “no quarter” flags, meaning the person displaying the flag will show no mercy to any perceived enemies. For both of these reasons the right-wing nationalist crowd likes them.

Yeah it’s a bad rhetorical position to have backed ourselves into, but also yeah we’re certainly there. I think the 00s really did it with the flag waving support our troops leading to defense of torture and dismissal of war crimes. By that point it was hard to be proud to be an American and rather than join a national conversation about what we’d done, the right saw us recoil in horror and advanced. They screamed “love it or leave it” and asserted that America was the best. By the time the disaster of the war on terror really hit them they owned the cultural perception of “patriotism” and “America fuck yeah”. They then descended into conspiracy to explain it, the most recent contrapoints video was quite compelling on that discussion.

The left has been doing some work to reclaim it. Shermanposting is very much an example, but reclaiming national pride is hard in the face of a nationalist movement. Our history is such a mix of good and bad and when you’re committed to reality it’s hard to reclaim the flag waving position, especially when it’s gotten so bad your national value of liberty has become a fascist buzzword and the country has ruined most of its goodwill internationally.

Pretty sure coating the whole thing with black ink to make it look ‘manly’ makes recycling more difficult to.

You could also see it as a form of greenwashing, making you think you’re buying local, and thus greener, if you don’t look closely.

We’re seeing this in Canada now too. Murcan products with a big maple leaf on them. Some stores are also slapping maple leafs on obviously Murcan products. We’re calling it Maple-washing.

I wonder what Murcans should call this OP example. Star-washing?

Chinese OEM resellers will print anything on the product and the packaging. It’s just another sale for them. Same guy probably sells it with ten different brandings and flags and quotes and slogans for different markets.

Christianity loves to pretend it’s still a downtrodden little secret society, with their sneaky Bible verses in tiny print and their fish symbols and such. It’s hilarious fantasy play, because they are a global hegemony and spend a lot of time persecuting others.

Trump’s latest rambling about hoping he goes to heaven ends with his assertion that we need more religion in the US. The whole thing is hilarious but that last part especially so.

They have a persecution fetish. They want so bad to be oppressed. Or at least think they do…

Well, that’s because they literally turned religious persecution into a religious fetish (as in, the anthropological term “fetish”, definition 1).

It’s ingrained in Christianity so deeply that the official doctrine of the catholic church is that only those that die from religious persecution can intercede with God.

They see anything other than absolute cultural dominance in all parts of the world to be persecution. I remember being told in catholic school as a kid how America wasn’t being very tolerant of Christianity because people would do fun things on Sunday mornings.

Like practice your religion as you want and I’ll do the same with mine, but part of religion is that it’s yours.

I think it’s funny that they put the verse on there, like I know what the fuck it says. I’m not looking it up.
