Mexican coke tastes better because it uses slightly less sweetener and twice the amount of sodium. There’s a YouTube video by chemist George Zaidan that did a chemistry deep dive on the topic. The acidity of coke breaks down the cane sugar (sucrose) into fructose and glucose (which is the composition of HFCS). There is no difference in flavor between cane sugar and HFCS in acidic beverages, but there are often other differences in the recipes that improve taste. Most notably sodium content.

In coke, which is acidic, sucrose breaks down into glucose and fructose anyway in the bottle before you drink it.

“Replacing high fructose corn syrup with cane sugar doesn’t make sense,” said Corn Refiners Association President and CEO John Bode. "Replacing high fructose corn syrup with cane sugar would cost thousands of American food manufacturing jobs, depress farm income, and boost imports of foreign sugar, all with no nutritional benefit.”

Corn farmers heavily voted for Trump, but according to them they’re weak and stupid anyway, so now we just wait for the cost of Coke to jump due to importing sugar. ‘Course, he never said anything about Pepsi, so people just flock to the much cheaper Pepsi products and Coke goes under! Brilliant!

Well, it’ll probably be a “new” version of coke with cane sugar instead of HFCS. New is in quotes because they already sell that product. They’ll take the existing product, call it Trump Coke, or something, and sell it for four times the price.

Jump? Have you bought soda recently in the store? I haven’t in years until my wife wanted some… Over 3 bucks for a 2 liter, and a 12 pack is over 10 bucks…

Last time I looked it was about 2 bucks for a 2 liter… And that upset me because I remember when that shit was less than a dollar and I’m not even that old…

      Anyway

Yup, I remember when 20oz bottles were $.69 and they gave out free ones with a cap. I mean, there was gambling involved in the advertising, but shit, even back then, that price was nothing. These days, even with my well paying job, a coke is 15 minutes worth of work.

I just get the supermarkets own brand of it. I’m mixing it with enough rum that you can’t tell the difference.

@ijhoo@lemmy.ml yeah, so now Coca Cola will not only pillage so much mexican water (it’s an actual terrible problem) they’ll also be doing it with cane sugar now. Perfect 😒

We have lots of both sugar and potable water here in Brazil… Maybe the US could send the wanted Brazilian criminals they are protecting in Florida to come get it.

Also Trump: I’m putting a 50% tariff on imports from the country that makes the majority of the world’s cane sugar (Brazil) because I’m angry that they’re punishing their fascist that attempted a coup.

This is the math. They assume that Coca Cola won’t raise prices, will import more sugar, raise tariff revenue, and they can have their cake and eat it, too.

Meanwhile, in reality, Coca Cola US already sells a kosher version with cane sugar for Passover every year. So they just keep doing that, bring 20 cases to the White House for a photo op, and maybe do a larger limited run with ads on Fox News for literally 1 day.

Once again, being an idiot has allowed T to negotiate a hard position and force someone to do something they already do.

What’s new is copying the Mexican president. He heard “cane sugar” in a chocolate bar announcement. Then talked to Coke about something they’re already doing.

Yeah, well just wait until he hears that cane farms are full of brown people. We’ll be back to HFCS in a week.

    • It’s not widely stocked except around Passover, IIRC because it’s more expensive. Because corn subsidies.

I don’t like Coke, and I stopped drinking colas altogether years ago, so I’m not exactly current on shelve stocking. But that’s my recollection.

I also don’t drink soda, but I seemed to recall that a few years back Coca Cola did a limited release of the cane sugar version when they finally caught on to how popular Mexican Coca Cola was in the US.

But when looking for that, I found the regular annual stock of the same thing.

My guess would be another limited release, and when the average consumer balks at even the tiniest price difference, they knock this down to a trickle of a steady supply only to fit purely political/ideological demands. Keep a single bottling plant in Texas running cane supply 2 days a week, that kind of thing.

        • Yeah. Back when sugar-Coke was a thing (it was going around in popular media about “better” Coke being available around Passover) we searched around and found some and tried it. I couldn’t tell a difference, but that’s probably because I don’t like Coke to begin with and hadn’t tasted the corn-syrup version in decades so had nothing to compare it with. It was putting lipstick on a pig.

You’re right that Coke-Cola’s just going to fine ways to cut corners. My guess is that they’d start with sugar, but slowly start adding corn syrup back in in increasing amounts until it’s back to mostly corn syrup and some token sugar.

I haven’t ever done a side by side comparison, but the European and most African versions seem less shockingly sweet to me. Like there’s just an extra super-sweet edge to the American one, and more carbonation. But maybe I’m just imagining that.

It’s not limited. Coke in the USA sells a knock off version of Mexican coke. Same style of bottle, similar labeling, but the bottle won’t be all fucked from recycling.

If your “Mexican” coke bottle isn’t beat to shit and you’re in the USA, odds are you’re drinking the American version.
