I’m new as in this is my first day using lemmy. I don’t know anything about lemmy etiquette and don’t want to do anything bad
thanks and have an amazing day! also plz be kind :D
Post frequently. Comment frequently. Make some friends/acquaintances. Try to remember that the folks making posts and comments are generally human (more so than on reddit). Try to be kind. Don’t pay too much mind to inter-instance drama unless it’s in a light-hearted and fun way (it’s simply not worth it otherwise), or has a real impact on your experience (in which case use the blocking tools). If someone named Nicole PMs you ignore it and maybe let your instance’s admin team know.
I’ve been here for two years now. It’s generally a great group and I’m happy I joined the API-ocolypse migration from reddit. Welcome! :)
Welcome!
Lemmy in its core is a supportive little communities of enthusiasts.
Just try to keep high level of discussion and be friendly in our home :)
It’s the same shit, lemmy has it’s own flavour of power hungry unhinged mods (see yepowertrippingbastards /c/yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com ). And due to multiple instances some of the vocal users are affected by tribalism (as in “my instance is better, your instance is xyz”).
Sometimes I’ll call you a dumbass, but if I do, you were probably being a dumbass.
Me too, came from reddit.
Don’t be a jerk and you will be fine.
We are all mostly human here. Just remember that. Hope you have a great time on the fediverse!
Thanks! Have a great day, and I will remember the human :D
One thing to note is more often people here reply with genuine comments and in good faith. There is also a lack of clever snarky comments and baiting due to the lack of karma system.
I mean, yes and no. Most of the userbase is that way. But there are some users (and instances) that tend to be massive pains in the ass. So build and curate your blocklist too.
This was the first thing that threw me off: people here tend to comment in good faith. I’m so used to people begging the question and generally having iron clad closed minds…from Reddit.
…but here conservations have often come to conclusion where I and another user agree to disagree amicably, or one of us moves towards the other in light of new information or a logical argument.
it’s really weird…but I hope it stays like that so I can get used to it.
Isn’t the up / downvote just like karma?
Yes, but there’s no gating based on it so it doesn’t mean anything and you can turn it off.
Karma on reddit tracks the accumulated likes and dislikes a user has gotten on all of their posts. Lemmy does not have a number like that.
Edit: What this means in practice is that on Reddit there are some users who make a lot of low-effort posts to get that karma number to go up and get a sense of accomplishment from that (even when they get a negative reputation among the other users), whereas on Lemmy that’s not really a thing. Lemmy has power-users that become well-known, but they’re more well-liked because they aim to gain actual reputation instead of just farming a karma number.
We could talli up our points but I much prefer comments under my posts the little number go up dopamine
I do snark for the art, and will live and die by it.
No they don’t. You’re lying and you know you’re lying. You’re just trying to suck up to the thread so you can get more karma. No one at Lemmy does that.
“lOok aT Me, i kNoW leMmY eTiQueTte. More oFteN PeoPle heRe rEply wiTH gEnuIne ComMenTs aNd In gOOd fAiTh.” You’re so full of it. Watch this, my comment will recieve more upvotes than you
bro forgot to add the /s
receive*
Right, that’s what I meant (BTW, I’m being sarcastic so I don’t mean it)
I’m sorry, but even knowing that it’s sarcastic, it comes off very snarky (it’s ok though)
Right, sorry. But still though, hope you like lemmy
I couldn’t resist

🧐
As others have said, lemmy.zip might be a better instance for you than .ml.
In general, I’d say people are nicer here, more arguments in good faith, which I like.
Politics range from socialism to anarchism. Any thread on any topic is a good place to discuss Linux. No one cares about how many upvotes people have. You may need to actively explore communities and join them if you want. It’s a bit like free software, if you think something is lacking, participate with more content and build up the community. Free software is great, what’s your favorite distro?Any thread on any topic is a good place to discuss Linux
😁😁😁
Especially if you use Arch Linux.
I use Arch Linux, by the way.
Beehaw.org is very pleasant
i would just point out that lemmy is merely a single platform swimming in the fediverse content waters… there are other options that provide differing features while interacting with the same or more content. see https://fedidb.com/
im an mbin cheerleader
just don’t be homophobic, transphobic,or sexist and you’re a-okay with me <3
I didn’t plan on being a bigot anyways, so I guess we’re cool! :D
Have a great day!
🥰
It’s mostly the same: discuss in good faith, don’t brigade, votes are for quality not for agreement, fuck spez
Similar to Reddit. Everything here seems to be more tech oriented and most communities are much quieter than reddit.
Also be prepared to follow the same topic/community across multiple servers. Reddit is older so the default community for a given topic had been established. Not so much here
most communities are much quieter than reddit.
We can change that right now!
I’m doing my part!
Not Necessarily all that well!
Each Lemmy instance has its own rules, and each community as well. Please read them before posting, because rule #3 for this community is:
- Not regarding using or support for Lemmy: context, see the list of support communities and tools for finding communities below
I switched from reddit awhile back. It is similar, but so far have seen a lot less hostility than reddit. I don’t have time for those types , so if they turn to insults rather than proper dialog I just block them, even if they weren’t talking to me directly. It makes it a much more pleasant experience
Hey screw you buddy,
But seriously it is much friendlier, the only thing i do differently is i tag users who bother me or who i see being and agitator.
That way i see who it is and don’t react. I also try not to block people because we all have bad days and it’s kinda like killing them with no trial.
I check their other comments to see if it is just a one off, or their overarching personality type. Majority they are dicks to everyone.
Sorry. I felt this is open ended enough of a question? Have a great day!
I’d say most folks at Lemmy are actively trying to grow the communities and the Community and so are genuinely welcoming and helpful.
I’d ask you to bring your friends and family. This might be controversial because Lemmy tends to attract amazingly talented tech geniuses — but others should be welcomed here as well.
I’m here to watch the corporate owned hegemonic control of all social media crumble— so I say we grow the Fediverse a great deal. Of course it’s not big enough to take the whole world but perhaps slow and regular growth will be met with the kind of independent commitment needed.
Anyway: WELCOME. Look. I wasn’t afraid of all caps. We’ll see how that goes.
Lemmy offers more freedom, more privacy, and your data is not sold. Unlike other social networks, Lemmy is part of the fediverse, so you have to choose a server that suits your tastes and preferences. Reddit has subreddits, and Lemmy has communities. Reddit does not respect privacy, but Lemmy does.
